Science

With a panoramic view of Mt Wellington and picturesque bush surroundings, the Science Department at Hobart College offers a particularly pleasant environment in which to learn about the world around us.

With active links to local employers and tertiary institutions, we are able offer a full range of subjects including general interest, vocational and pre-tertiary subjects.

The ocean is a strong focus of studies at Hobart College, with courses in Marine Biology, Scuba Diving and VET Aquaculture being offered. These courses are very hands on and involve extensive field work.

The Plant and Agricultural Science class works with a number of agricultural organisations outside the college to give students wide practical experience in many different agricultural activities.

Electronics is offered in a purpose built workshop, with courses for all levels of interest including pre-tertiary.

For students who want a preparatory course in physics and chemistry we offer Introduction to Physical Sciences, a course which provides an introduction to the technical aspects of Physics and Chemistry in a practical context.

Physical Sciences provides a pre-tertiary introduction to Physics and Chemistry, and is accepted by the University of Tasmania as a sufficient prerequisite for many of its courses, including Engineering. It is available to year 11 students.

Biology is a pre-tertiary course available to both year 11 and year 12 students. The course involves students in field and practical work. Many students have this year been involved in whale rescue training following on from last year’s successful involvement the whale rescue operation on Maria Island.

Physics is one of the fundamental sciences, and prepares students for advanced tertiary studies in science and engineering.

Chemistry is also one of the fundamental sciences, providing students with an understanding of many of the chemical processes in science and industry.
