Studies of Society and Environment

SOSE

bullet examine the relationships that exist between humans and their environment over time;
bullet focus on gathering information to explore current issues;
bullet encourage students to develop a point of view about issues;
bullet assist students to use evidence to support their viewpoints;
 
This process enables students to use these skills in making sound judgments as active citizens in the workplace and in society.

 Tourism Studies:  

bullet improve your knowledge of the tourism industry and career pathways within it;
bullet make regular  excursions to tourism ventures;
bullet focus on sustainable tourism developments.

Tasmanian Investigations

bullet excursions into the local community;
bullet choice of areas of interest to study e.g. the history, environment or lifestyle of a locality;
bullet the chance to develop stories about people and their connections to the wider world.
 
Young People and Issues in Society  

bullet looks at current issues in society such as abortion, euthanasia, prostitution, smoking, cloning, gay marriages, IVF, terrorism;
bullet the focus is mainly  legal but also some political, historical and social views;
bullet individual and group research, presentations and some excursions.
 
Geography  

bullet world population and development issues;
bullet global, national and local geographical issues, such as global warming;
bullet excursions to research local urban and environmental issues.


 

Australia in Asia and the Pacific  

bullet applies the methods of two subjects like Geography, Economics, Tourism and Religious Studies to the study of Australia and its nearest neighbours;
bullet studies one contemporary issue like migration or aid within the region by means of student research.


Modern World   - has three main areas of study:  

bullet the causes of conflicts and how they have been resolved;
bullet revolutions and/or dictatorships;
bullet struggles for independence and the use of terrorism and/or diplomacy in this.

Australian Studies  

bullet through a study of historical forces that have shaped modern Australia, students examine Australian culture and current issues facing Australia such as land rights, refugees and republicanism

Studies in Religion covers

bullet two of the major world religions
bullet contemporary religious issues such as why evil exists and how to prove the existence of god;

Ancient Civilizations  

bullet examines the lives, beliefs and activities of the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans;
investigates archaeology and written sources in ancient civilisations.
develops an understanding of how our present history has been shaped by the ancient past;
bullet studies themes such as religion art and literature, social life and history & politics in relation to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Roman;
bullet involves research on a topic of your choice.
