Destination Hobart

Departure: Step by Step

  1. When you arrive, look for the check-in desks for you airline.

  2. Give your air ticket and your passport to the check-in officer and check-in your baggage (except the hand luggage you are taking on the plane). You may have to pay departure tax here, and you may also have to fill in the departure card. State whether you want a smoking or non-smoking area (smoking is not permitted on any flight within Australia). If you want a widow seat, ask now! The officer will give you back your passport, your air ticket and give you a boarding pass for your flight. Keep these handy, and do not lose them.

  3. Go to Customs/Immigration. Say goodbye to family/ friends, declare any video recorders, computers and other expensive goods before you go. You will get a form and you can prove ownership to Customs when you come back home.

  4. Look at the information screens for the gate number and boarding time of your flight. If you have spare time, relax have a drink at a café, visit the duty-free shop, buy a book, enjoy yourself – but be sure to be at your gate for boarding time.

Arrival: Step by Step

  1. 1. Towards the end of the flight you will be given two forms:

    • The Incoming Passenger Card is to be completed in English. This asks for your personal details and your visa or your residency status. Overseas students will usually have a “Visitor or Temporary Entrant” status. On this for you will be asked how long you plan to stay and your main reason for coming to Australia. You should tick “Education” if you are a student. If you have any problems filling in this form, ask a flight attendant for assistance.

    • The Traveller’s Statement is your customs declaration. Usually you can ask for a copy of this in your own language. This form asks you to declare the goods you have with you and in your bags. Answer the questions honestly.

  2. Disembarking: remember to take all your things with you, but do not take any airline food with you! There will be signs to tell where to go when you leave the plane.

  3. Go to the entry control point. Give the immigration officer your passport, Incoming Passenger Card and your Traveller’s Statement. Everything except the Incoming Passenger Card will be returned to you.

  4. Go to the baggage claim area to collect your bags. They will be on the conveyor belt with your flight number on it. A trolley will make things easier if you have a lot of luggage, but you may have to pay for it in some airports. You can get Australian coins from a foreign exchange counter.

  5. Next, go to Customs. Have your Traveller’s Statement ready. If you do not have anything to declare then follow the green route. If you do have something to declare, follow the red route. Your luggage maybe checked even at the green route.

  6. Go to the exit gate to meet you airport pick-up or find transport.
    Welcome To Australia
